8 Things You Do If You're A Final Year Student

I've been in my final year at University for just over 6 weeks now and one things for sure, it's a hell of a lot different to any of my other years. Whether you've graduated and can totally relate to these, or are a first/second year and wondering what it's like; here are 8 things you do if you're a final year.

1) You wonder if the library is going to start charging you rent. I don't think I've ever sat in the library as much as I have in these past few weeks than all my years at university combined. I'm here nearly everyday, level 1, losing a bit of my soul. What's even worse is that I don't think I even get THAT much work done in the library. Guaranteed half the time I'm writing a blogpost, looking at other blogs or even worse, just watching youtube videos. Though to be fair, working at home is just not my forte, I would like in bed until 12, order a takeaway and watch Gavin & Stacey on repeat. Eh.

2) You use the excuse, "but it's my final year" FAR too often. In all fairness, it is my final year. This is my final year to be able to go to the union, pay student priced tickets and go out without having any cares or responsibilities. I'm THAT friend who convinces you to go out. Whether you have a 9am, work or even a meeting the next day, I am there to remind you that it is your final year and therefore we have to make the most of it.

3) You swear you have ten times more assignments than in second year. Seriously though, why do I have an assignment due nearly every week? This isn't the student life I was promised!? This semester it's all coursework, coursework, coursework and to be honest with you, I'm sick of it. Apart from my journalism coursework, that's actually okay, because I don't have to reference anything Thank you Wayne!

4) You over complicate things. I don't know what it is but this year I swear my life has been a lot more dramatic than before. It's like I need my own reality TV show "Keeping Up With Caroline Malone". Whether it be guys, friends, family or even just randomers life is just becoming a hell of a lot more complicated.

5) You procrastinate differently. In first year I used to procrastinate with going out, going shopping, the movies, out for dinner and making my housemate drive us to Burger King just because. This year....do you want to know what I do this year?! I go to the gym! THE GYM! In all honesty, I have never gone to the gym 3-4 times in my life but suddenly this year I'm pretending as if I'm some sort of active individual who cares about their health. Caroline, you've changed.

6) You think you have all your work done. And then. Dissertation. If someone utters the word "dissertation" to a final year we literally screw up our faces and curl into a ball. At least I do. I complete an assignment, being it a 2,000 word essay, I feel so good, high-five myself, treat myself to a chocolate orange yummmm and then there it is. Looming over my head like a dark cloud. Dissertation. You know how people always talk about that coursework like "oh have you started?" or "Yeah I'm well on it and it's actually not too bad!" - that doesn't occur with dissertation. We just don't. talk. about. it. Even writing this paragraph makes my stomach churn next topic Caroline please!

7) You begin to feel really really old. The first time it struck me that I was old was when I saw someone, clearly a fresher, walking in their leaver's jumper that said '15. I nearly cried. With mine saying '12 I literally felt like a grandma. It's even worse when the Freshers ask you for advice or look at your with wide-eyes as if you have all the knowledge in the world. What's even harder, girls you'll get me here, is that all of the guys are either your own age or younger! Do you know how awkward it is when you spot a cute guy to find out he's 18. The fail. The humiliation.

8) You become irresponsible with money again. This kind of only really happens when you're a student who took an industrial placement year. When I was working I would always bring a packed lunch cute, rarely go out and spend a fortune and barely even shopped. I know, can you imagine me not shopping? NOT cute. It's almost as if somehow this year I'm back to "oh brilliant let's dive into my savings, my student loan and my parents money again because I honestly don't care." What happened to my budget grid?! What does the word 'budget' even mean?!

  1. A dissertation sounds so tough, I can imagine it must feel like all your courseworks in one, good luck though I'm sure you'll do great! I'm exactly the same with the age thing, it's like you're expected to be more responsible when you're really not :)

    1. I just don't see how I can write 12,000 words?! I don't think I even know that many words! Exactly! To be fair I think the older I've been getting, the more irresponsible I am! xx

  6. Oh dear, I'm feeling very old as I graduated a year and a half ago! Honestly dissertations aren't that terrible though :) I tackled mine like several mini essays and set my own little deadlines and it worked really well for me xx

    Hang on in there girl!

Ps. My friend basically lived in the Library in her final year, it's obviously the student norm!
    Good luck with it all!

  8. Oh Caroline, your posts are just pure love for me. Haha, I loved this beyond! I have almost finished my second year and time is going by so fast!!! Nice to see what can I expect in my final year ;) That being said, I CAN RELATE TO 1 SO MUCH. I am on exam block right now and after the first two days I realised if I want to be productive it is a necessity for me not stay at home, sitting on my bed with my laptop, in pjs, constantly going back and forth between the fridge and pantry "studying" :P. Past week I have been at my uni library 8am-5pm easy!

P.S. #3 made me laugh so much and I can totally get where #2 is coming from, I reckon I would be the same!

  9. I definitely relate to everything you've mentioned here. Luckily my dissertation is quite short so I'm not too worried about it but the work just seems so much more intense this year, it's just hand in after hand in. I'm joining the gym soon too, because I need a few more ways to procrastinate, clearly. x

  10. Hahah I can relate to many of these! Especially that last one, I was so good in my placement year, saved so much, and now I'm just spending it all on needless things and feeling terrible about it afterwards! But at the time, that asos purchase felt so right... xD

  12. By the time I was in my final year of university I started spending all my money on makeup and clothes because I just wanted anything to cheer myself up! I mean I didn't hate uni or anything but in your last year things can get really overwhelming.
