Creating That Dewy Base

I think there is something about the Spring/Summer months that makes us all ache for that perfect dewy/glow base. Last year I was all about that matte face, matte lips, matte personality (lol jokes, well actually up to you to judge) and anything that would look, well...matte. I've sort of realised that as my skin type is pretty dry, that this is not the sort of makeup look I really should be aiming for, and I've started to alter my skin routine and purchasing new products to move into the dewy side of things.

Something I learned from KathleenLights, was adding a little bit of oil into my foundation. I don't tend to do this with my lighter-coverage foundations, but for example, if I'm looking for a much more heavier coverage or going on a night-out, I love applying 1-2 small drops of the Kiehl's Daily Revival Concentrate into my Vichy Dermablend Foundation*. I was afraid at first that this would make my foundation an odd consistency, but instead, it really just adds a little bit more glow to the product. It applies a lot more smoothly and all-in-all just makes my foundation less cakey.

I think different foundations create different looks completely. As my skin is seriously drying, it doesn't tend to look dewy at all, regardless of the foundation I've used. That was until I picked up the L'Oreal Nude Magique Cushion Foundation. I won't bang on too much about this product as I've done a full review here but it is finally the foundation that makes me look alive and well. I seriously hope that they bring this out in a pump form, because I feel as if the packaging is a little finicky and that you don't really get THAT much product in it, I'm a greedy human being.

Next is using the Mac Strobe Cream. I picked this up a while ago and it has fast become a staple in my everyday makeup. Depending on the foundation I use, I use this product in two ways. If I'm using a product such as, the L'Oreal Nude Magique Cushion Foundation I tend to use this as more of a primer. Now if you're not careful, this can give you some serious grease instead of glow, so I recommend only applying 2 tiny squidges? pumps? ... what do you call it if it comes in a tube? Two tiny splodges let's say, of the product and I apply it all over my skin. If I'm using a much heavier foundation, I will apply it alongside the Kiehl's oil, and it makes this gorgeous dewy fresh look, with zero shimmer, but just sheen. Pure lovely sheen.

I guess you wouldn't really consider a face powder something that would ultimately help achieve a "glow" as such, as a lot of powders really just mattify. The Milani Illuminating Face Powder '03 Beauty's Touch' is a product I've raved about constantly on this blog, so I won't repeat too much into it for those regulars. But for those newbies, this is a gorgeous all-over-the-face powder. It has some bronze, highlight and blush shades all in one, and can we just appreciate the packaging *swoon*. At first I thought this would work as a blush, but instead it has this lovely sheen, that when lightly dusted all over with a Real Techniques Powder Brush, it just ultimately gives your face much more life! Of course highlighter plays a role into a dewy look, but I felt that it was a little obvious to post (shame on me) but if you're wondering, Mary Lou and Mac's Soft and Gentle would be my go-to!

So there we have it, a couple of my favourite products to create a dewy and full-of-life face! I would love to know if you're much more of a matte or dewy face lover, and what some of your essentials are to apply that glow!

  8. I have read about the tip on adding facial oil into thick foundation but I never tried it myself. I don't think I have any thick foundations to try it with too...definitely have to rummage through my stash and find out.

  10. My skin is also on the drier side so I love a good glow! I like to mix in a bit of Strobe Cream or other liquid highlight into my foundation, then add extra highlight onto my cheekbones.
