Kylie Cosmetic Lip Kit vs Barry M Matte Me Up Lip Kit

With 'dupes' causing a massive stir in the blogging community, I thought it was actually very apt that I posted this blog post today. Without getting totally political about the whole dupes situation, I personally think that if there is a cheaper alternative product I'm all for it, hence the post. SO ON THAT NOTE. I thought I would do a little comparative post between the Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kit Candy K vs the Barry M Matte Me Up Lip Kit 'Go To Nude'

I've done individual posts on both of the lip products here and here, sneaky little plug in I did there but I thought what would be more interesting is a comparative post between the two. When I first picked up the Barry M lip kit I hadn't had the Kylie Cosmetics one, but work very kindly gifted it to me so I thought now I can let you know my thoughts and if you investing in the Kylie one is worth while OR if you can just ditch it!

I think the first thing that needs to be talked about when it comes to the two products is availability. It's no surprise that the Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kits are a bugger to get a hold of. Not only do you have to pay delivery but you are most likely to get screwed over by customs. Her lip kits used to sell out ridiculously but now that the hype has died down, you can pretty much get a hold of the shades easily. With Barry M on the other hand regardless of the fact they are just drugstore, they are SERIOUSLY hard to get a hold of in any Superdrug I've been too. Most of the shades are sold out but are easily available on the Superdrug website.

Of course next thing to discuss is price. Now price can't really be discussed without the quality of the product, but if we got rid of that completely the prices are as followed. For a Barry M Matte Me Up Lip Kit which contains a liquid lipstick (__) and a lip liner (__) for £6.99. The Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kits retail for £23.30 and contains a liquid lipstick (0.11 fl oz) and a lip liner (1.0g) - just saying, that's a massive price difference right there, especially seeing as you will end up paying more for the Kylie Cosmetics post delivery and customs.
Left to Right: Kylie Cosmetics Lip Kit 'Candy K' & Barry M Matte Me Up Lip Kit 'Go To Nude'
Packaging wise, not particularly something essential to this rundown, but I've decided this is going to be extremely in depth now (4 paragraphs in) they are pretty much near identical. I don't have a big 'say' on the packaging as I do think they are both sleek, minimal and well, pretty much the same.

Now of course comes onto the formulas. Firstly let's start with the lip liners. Between the two, I would have to say that the Kylie lip liner formula hands down wins. It's extremely creamy and reminds me of the Colourpop lip liners which just glide so well. That's not to say that the Barry M one is horrific, it just drags that little bit more. Both liners are pigmented and provide an opaque base for the liquid lipstick!

With the liquid lipsticks the formula is very much the same. It's much more of a runny formula rather than a mousse texture but dries down very matte. I would say the Barry M lip kit takes only a fraction longer than the Kylie one to full dry down, but both do dry down completely matte. They are both very comfortable to wear and if I scrub my lips and apply lip balm prior, they last a good 5-6 hours without needing re-application or crumbling. To me there isn't particularly a difference in the formula and wear of the lip kits at all.

My one gripe is that the Barry M Matte Me Up Lip Kit comes in only 5 shades and they used to be limited addition which doesn't look like it is anymore so for versatility Kylie hands down wins.

So what is my verdict. To be honest, unless you are a complete Kylie fanatic and/or are desperate to try her Lip Kits, I would honestly not bother. To me they are near identical. If you're someone who can look past the fact that Barry M have only created a couple of shades in their collection I would definitely opt for them. The likeliness of both of these kits are incredible and I definitely don't think you're missing out on much if you opt for Barry M.

  1. The Barry M looks exactly the same! I never got myself the Kyle Cosmetics only because of shipping prices and I wasn't sure if it was worth the hype. But looking at those swatches only proves that there as so many shades out theres that do the same thing without the luxury label! Thanks for sharing.

  15. I have to say that I've skip the Kylie frenzy so I haven't tried her products yet. Still, other products can be equally as good just without the hype. Sometimes we just pay so much more to get the name.

  16. This is such a helpful post! I've been looking for some liquid lipstick dupes that have similar texture to Kylie's! And I also love the shaded of it, there's almost no difference between those two! Thank you xx

  18. I've never heard of Barry M, and I'm curious whether I can get them in the states. I feel like Kylie lip kits might be a bit overrated although I do like the colors, so I love to see good dupes!
