How My Blog Has Changed

When I first started blogging 7 years ago it was my little piece of internet and my safe haven. 7 years later I admittedly think my blog has changed...some for the better, some for the worst. I always found writing somewhat therapeutic. I've always written journals but as I started to grow older I thought it would be easier and better to start my journal online. I would write life updates, poetry and really put my heart down on...well not paper, online. However we all know the ability to stay anonymous online is pretty difficult, and with Instagram and Twitter suggestions it wasn't long until my friends and family knew about my blog. However, when that started happening I changed my content, a lot. I focused more on beauty, lifestyle and food, things that I knew wouldn't and couldn't upset people. Don't get me wrong, I've been so lucky with all the opportunity and brand support, I love writing about beauty as well, but I stopped putting down the personal chats on the blog and I truly miss it.

Every now and again I'll write a life update and I'll want to include something like, today has been a really crap day because of my friends. Or work. Or family and I just don't feel as if I can write about that anymore on here. I've had it first hand where friends have asked me "oh is that sentence in your recent post about me?" - example here. I no longer feel that my blog is safe to talk about my ups and downs, when I'm feeling frustrated or in a rut, because I'm constantly worried that someone will read it or that it will completely backfire. There have been a couple of times in the past month I've just wanted to jot down how I feel but I just can't anymore.

I've been thinking that perhaps for the times I want to write, but can't that I should get myself another journal - perhaps that will help in the same therapeutic way - without my entire heart being shared on the internet.

Let me know in the comments below on your thoughts about sharing your personal life online and if you do and don't.

  2. I'm so sad you feel like you can't write how you feel anymore! Not many people in my life know about my blog so I can write pretty freely about things going on in my life, maybe you could try micro-blogging on your instagram if you don't have personal friends on there? xx

  3. 100% get what you mean.. it's like this is your escape away from reality as such and then bam in comes reality and everyone with it. Write about what makes you happy though love, if friends or family question it don't feel as if you have to answer, this blog is yours. xo

  4. Totally understand what you're saying - it can be a bit of a battle sometimes. I love personal posts but perhaps a separate journal is a good idea for anything that may upset your loved ones xxx

  5. I know what you mean. There are so many things I want to write about but feel I can't because my family read my blog. A journal sounds like a good idea or maybe even a separate blog that they don't have to know about?! xo

  7. I think sharing your thoughts and feelings online is great, there will always be someone who can relate to you and talk with you about it! I say go for it, as long as you're comfortable of course :)

  8. I think it's great to have somewhere you can write about your personal life but these days it does cause too much trouble! It's easier to write about the positive things going on, rather than the negative because it causes drama! At the same time, you need a release from the negative things and people who read your posts can really help.

I guess you just have to do whatever makes you happier and be careful.

  9. It's really tricky. You started your blog for you and at the end of the day, you should be able to post about what you want to. Sometimes I quite like ready personal posts because it definitely helps you understand the person behind the blog, and as long as you aren't being horrible and naming names you should be allowed to write about what you want to. But I know what you mean, it's totally different when people in your "real" life find out about blogging. xx

  11. That's why I make sure to keep my blog a secret as much as possible. Only my husband, his cousin in the Philippines (who also loves makeup), my best friend and former wedding planner know about my blog. I can't let other people know, especially in my family (Filipinos love to gossip) and I can't stand the thought of other people talking behind my back about it. That way I can write something more personal on my blog.

  12. Personal chat type posts are quite lovely. It definitely helps the readers see a different side to the blogger and have more things to relate to them then beauty posts and what not. x

  13. I know EXACTLY what you mean. I know so many people around me read my blog so I really have to filter everything I post so it doesn't offend or upset anyone. I wish I could be more open again but I don't really know the solution.

  14. I think it could still be therapeutic to share personal life online - obviously only what you feel appropriate. It's very personal so it could change with time. Personally, sometimes I need to write about it but mostly I still use my journal!

  15. I love sharing personal posts but sometimes I feel like I do need to cut details out. I'm trying to get better at not caring what other people think, whether I know them personally or not xx Nikita

  16. I like sharing personal things, but I do try and hold some things back through fear of offending people or accidentally saying something that might offend people!
