Full-time Working and Blogging - A Chat

Blogging isn't easy. Fact. It's not as simple as taking a quick photo, jotting down something quickly on your computer and suddenly being handed loads of free stuff. It's just not that easy. And guess what. It isn't an easier with a full time job. Here goes a bit of a rant/chatty blog post. When I was studying at university blogging was, yes, a bit easier. Not in the sense of the free stuff. I mean as in easier to post. Not a load easier, but easier. It was something I could fill my time with, a great hobby where I could spend all day taking photos, not having to plan the week's posts ahead of the time, because I was fortunate enough to be able to take photos and blog during the day. Basically I had 4 contact hours a week, safe to say I had time on my hands.

I started my new job two months ago and I have been loving it. It's a 9-6 job but as I am commuting from quite far away at the moment until I move into London, so it's more like a 6:30am - 7:30pm kind of job. So tell me this, how the hell can I stick to my three times a week blog posts and daily Instagram posts? I don't. That's the answer. I just don't. I used to be so good, taking a photo for Instagram everyday, #motd and #fotd and all that, and posting on my allocated days; Tuesday, Thursday and Sundays. Now I post three times a week whenever I can. I try and stick to my schedule as much as I can (ironically this week I actually will as I did a lot of blog work on Sunday). But, if I haven't been able to take photos for a Thursday blog post, I'll try when I get home to upload it on the Friday. The issue is, if I don't get photos the weekend before, there is no sunlight for me to take photos in the evenings. Some real struggles right there.

I'm not kicking myself too much for not keeping up with my blog as much as I used to. My job is my job and I absolutely love it and at the moment it's the most important thing to me at the moment. But I love my blog and want to continue doing it whilst I work. So that's just it. It's my blog and I post now when and if I can. If I'm having a busy weekend and just don't have time to do any blog prep, I will try and squeeze it in, in the evenings. If not, they may be a couple of days later. One of the things which does suck a little bit is the fact that I've been invited to a blogger event which is held during the day during the week. It will be a little rubbish if this is a regular occurrence as a girls gotta work right!

With all that being said, I have the best readers who always leave such lovely comments on my blog posts and I appreciate every single one of you, which is why I won't ever completely stop blogging because of work. Work does and always will take priority, but because blogging is only part-time and a hobby I don't want to  make it a chore on the weekends, but instead make it that fun thing that I do.

I would love to know out there, who else finds blogging and balancing full time work difficult? Let me know some of your tips!

P.S This is actually a mid-year 2016-2017 diary, don't worry I'm definitely not THAT organized hahaha!

  1. It is so tough blogging alongside a full time job! Good on you for carrying on despite your hectic schedule. My best advice after working full time for the past year and blogging too, is to just go at your own pace. Don't beat yourself up for not posting as much as you used to or whatever! It's tricky enough without adding extra pressure to yourself. So glad you are enjoying your new job!!

    1. Aw thank you, isn't it seriously hard? I'm trying to not beat myself up about it, like you said it's so important to go at your own pace! Thank you, I really am lucky to be loving it so much! xx

  2. I hear you with this!! I've worked full time Monday to Friday since I started my blog and it is TOUGH. Especially when winter rolls around and then you have no free time when there's still natural light for photos!! Cry! x

    1. Oh no stop I am absolutely dreading the day that I can't quickly take an emergency photo when I get home from work! Have to remember to be on my game in Winter Time! xx

  3. Blogging and working full time is such a challenge and definitely requires a lot of planning! I know for me a majority of my weekends are spent preparing for the week ahead. I think you're doing a great job of balancing the two!

    1. It's seriously hard, I have to say sometimes I cannot be bothered to blog on the weekend but remember that I would be 10x more stressed during the week if I don't do it! That means so much to me, thank you! xx

  4. It's great that you're not being too hard on yourself because that is a really long day and a decent commute! I'm impressed at what you accomplish doing both!

    1. Haha it's quite a decent commute but I guess the great thing about blogging is that it is a hobby I love and enjoy so makes it worth while! xx

  5. I only post once a week because I work full time and just wouldn't be able to keep up with photo taking and writing any more than that! The most I ever do is twice a week but it's very rare haha! I have been trying to post once a day on Instagram lately and it's been a bit easier but some of my photos are so dark because I take them last minute before I leave for work but meh what can you do!

    1. I literally live for your blog posts though as well! The instagram photo taking is definitely a tough one, it's just after a load of photo taking for a blog post on the weekend, it's so difficult to take more photos and more photos for other social media platforms! God knows what I'm going to do when it comes to Winter! xx

  6. It's such a struggle trying to juggle them both! I can only manage 2 a week and sometimes struggle with that, it's hard to know what may crop up to ruin your schedule! Missing one won't stop anyone reading your blog :) xx

    1. Aww thanks Tamz, I know I worry that without a consistent blog schedule no one would read it but then to me, I'm not really bothered by the figures and the comment numbers and I just want to ensure that it's a hobby that I keep enjoying! xx

  7. Literally cannot relate to you more, I'm the same I work 9-5 Monday- Friday, Its really not easy keeping up the blogging, trying to work AND actually having a social life! I used to really beat myself up about blogging often because of work, but I feel like I have a routine now to do all my blogging on weekends. At the same time, if it turns out I'm really busy over the weekend then my blog posts can wait, its so much healthier to just enjoy life and not worry! xx

    1. You're so right Lisa, like sometimes the last thing you want to do is for your blog to feel like another job on top of the job you should stopped doing during the week! I just think the hardest part is making your content as good as possible because I just dont want to seem rushed! xx

  8. I work crazy hours sometimes but luckily I work a lot of night shifts so I have some daylight to work with! I think it would be so hard to blog 3 times a week and work full-time, it's definitely easier during school. Best of luck with it, I'm glad you love your new job!

    1. Totally agree with you, I just try and do too much on the weekends sometimes during the day, seeing friends etc and therefore never have sunlight on the weekends for blogging (oops!) - take me back to my student hours where I could endlessly blog!xx
