Tanya Burr 'Birthday Suit' Palette Review

I have and always will be a little skeptical on Youtuber products. Don't get me wrong, I watch them, I take what they review and recommend to heart (probably a bit more than I should) and do admire them for being able to come so far, creating beauty launches, comic books, cooking books and novels etc. However, I do think, well how good can these be? I've only ever owned one Tanya Burr Cosmetic product, one of her lip glosses, and yes I was a fan, but not completely blown away by it, and therefore was a little bit skeptical on the eyeshadow palettes. When she posted her video on YouTube all about her new launches, the Tanya Burr 'Birthday Suit' palette caught my eye. I'm a lover of any neutral/warm eyeshadows and thought this would be a cute little palette to try out and travel with. I picked it up on Feel Unique, as it's actually a lot harder than you think to pick up in Superdrug shops, like seriously, hardly any small Superdrug stores sell her new collection/or her collection at all.

Firstly off the bat, I wasn't so impressed with the packaging. It comes in a cardboard case, with a quite a small heart shaped mirror, which I have to say, isn't the best. I was a bit annoyed that a couple of the pans, you can see, had started to wobble about and become misplaced. I have to say though, for the price  (£6) I can't really be asking for a high-end product can I? Although not a massive fan of the packaging, I do like that it is quite a compact palette, which is quite nice for travel as it does have that mirror. One thing I do love the size of the pans. I do find in some palettes that they can be quite small, but these are quite wide, meaning you don't get a lot of mess on the packaging.

Now onto the actual important part of the review, the eyeshadows! You get four neutral/warm shades in the palette:

Marzipan

This is a very light beige/champagne shimmer shadow. Although it may not look as impressive on the arm swatch, it is one of the prettiest eyeshadows in the palette I find. I love using this in the inner corner of the lid, as it really brightens up the eyeshadow look. I also prefer the consistency of the eyeshadows, the formula isn't as crumbly in the shimmer shades as the matte shades. They pack on quite nicely and are very buildable.

Toast

This is the shade that I use all over lid when using this palette for a day time look. It's a very light/peach toned matte brown nude. As mentioned before, this does have a bit more a crumbly consistency than the shimmer shades which is a bit annoying. I do find that the colour doesn't have as much of a staying power during the day as the shimmer shades. The pigmentation is quite nice, not the best that I've experienced, but if you build it up with a couple of layers it does create quite a nice shade.

Cocoa Sugar

This I would have to say is one of the nicer pigmented eyeshadows in the palette after Marzipan. Unfortunately though it is also the colour I use the least. I'm much more of a fan of using a matte colour in my crease, and therefore opt for soft truffle more rather than cocoa sugar. Cocoa Sugar reminds me of the shade "Liar" in the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette, with a subtle pink undertone, rather than being a true brown shade. I reckon for an evening look, applying Cocoa Sugar all over the lid, and Soft Truffle in the crease, would make for a nice smokey eye, however you would 100% need primer and a setting spray to keep it in place during the evening.

Soft Truffle

This I would have to say is the most dissapointing in terms of pigmentation. This is more of a ashy brown matte toned shadow. As you can see from the swatch it can be a little patchy and compared to what it looks like in the pan, it's a little light. Saying that, it does make for a nice crease shade. It blends out very well meaning you don't get any harsh lines when applying it.

Swatches Left to Right: Marzipan, Toast, Cocoa Sugar & Soft Truffle

For now I've been loving the palette for an everyday nude look at work. I apply Toast all over the lid, Marzipan in the inner corner, blend out, and then apply Soft Truffle to my crease. I find this combination makes for the easiest look. Although I wouldn't say the palette is a god send and something I could live without, as in I could have done without it, I'm glad I've tried this palette to see that yes, these can be a little bit hyped up. For someone whose just trying out makeup, this can be a nice little present as it does have those necessary shadows and would compliment a lot of skin tones.

Let me know in the comments below if you've tried out any of Tanya Burr's other products and also what are some of your favourite YouTuber cosmetic products?

  2. I absolutely love the two new releases of the eyeshadow palettes, they are both my everyday palettes now! I've been wanting to do a review on them myself but because of the shiny packaging I'm finding it so difficult to take a good quality, high lighting photo so props to you caroline! xx

  5. It surprises me that you're a fan of the shade Cocoa Sugar, I recently bought this palette and found the pigmentation of it to be so bad! I love the other three shades though and I created a lovely everyday look using them :)

  8. I've not brought any of Tanya's eyeshadow palettes yet, but I'm swaying towards this one as it's neutral colours. I love that you've been so honest! Fab review!

  12. The shade range looks lovely but I hate the look of the packaging! I think I would have to depot it! Pity the pigmentation isn't the greatest but it's a really good price!

  13. I am skeptical when it comes to YouTuber products and I haven't checked many of them. I only have lashes from Fleur which I really like. I want to try Martha Moo from Tanya, however locak superdrug doesn't sell it so I will have to check when I see another one. These eyeshadows look pretty, however I am not the fan of cardboard packaging as well, it just doesn't look right!
