My Flatmate Recommends: Skincare

My flatmate, Emily, is as makeup/skincare obsessed as myself and although doesn't have a blog and hates the photography element of blogging (hence why this has my classic scarf/magazine/white photo combo all over it), I thought it would be fun to run a series where she write up her recommendations as a sort of 'guest blog post' style on Iridescent Places so she can have a little feel for blogging!

My skin and I have had a very love hate relationship. Growing up I had dark olive oily skin which meant I tanned at the first sign of sun, but by my mid-teens oily skin meant spotty shiny skin. Only after a whole lot of strong antibiotics and stress did it clear up again. These days I have pretty combination skin and have trialed and tested a whole load of skin products over the years. I still tan quite well but I also still get the occasional breakout, but my skin and my lips especially can also get quite dry and cracked in the colder months. So without further ado, here are my highlights and current faves…

If I have spots, be them clusters of small annoying bumps or the giant "why have I got this the night before a date" kind, I'm reaching straight for my Clarins Truly Matte Pure and Radiant Mask. You can use it as a 10 minute beauty treatment all over your face or put it on a spot overnight to work its magic. Think sudocrem but with super powers.

Whilst it's not unusual for me to be unnecessarily drunk and badly behaved, it is unusual I fall asleep with make up on. It's a killer for my skin, and crusty morning mascara means stingy eyes. Sometimes you don't have time for the lotions and potions at 4am (or 9pm after a long day for that matter) so you need a quick fix. Whilst I don't get on with most wipes, I have fallen in love with Water Wipes: The World’s Purest Baby Wipes. There's no chemicals, nothing harsh for the skin, just water and fruit extract. They're not expensive AND they really work. I like a smokey eye though, so I rely on Clinique Make-Up Remover For Lids, Lashes And Lips to get off any residue liner or lipstick.

Unlike Caroline who sleeps like a baby every night, it's not a surprise if I find myself lying in bed awake in the middle of the night for no rational reason. I am therefore no stranger to an under eye bag or general puffiness. This means that I cannot live without good concealer and Clinique All About Eyes Rich. It's quite reasonably priced for a higher end skin care product and is so cooling and luxurious if you keep it in the fridge. Also taking care of your eyes will help you avoid wrinkles for as long as possible *apparently*...

So if I could take 5 things to a desert island; a tube of Elizabeth Arden 8-hour Cream would totally be one of them. I love everything from this range, I won’t leave the house without an 8-hour lip balm and the hand cream is an essential when the weather is cold. This stuff is honestly so great for so many things. Burns, chapped lips, healing scars, holding eyebrows in place. If you've never tried it, you need to.

And last but by no means least, I have to give a shout out to my multi-purpose drug store hero… Avene Thermale Spring Water Spray. This stuff is so multi purpose, perfect for spritzing your face on long haul flights or beach days, quick changing colour on make up brushes but I mostly use this for setting my make up when I use powder foundation. It gives a great dewy look which I love.

Right I'll stop now or I'll go on for hours. Please hit us up with your skincare recommendations in the comments, who doesn't love sharing a fabulous new find?

  1. I adore Clinque products! So far, they've been the only skin care brand that works perfectly for my skin. I've tried other brands but nothing compares at the moment! I especially love their 'dramatically different moisturising gel' for my combination / oily skin. Acts as a perfect base before I put on my makeup.

  2. I have been a fan of a lot of Clinique skincare products for years and that All About Eyes Rich is something I use on and off for a while now.

  3. I am super oily, so I have yet to find a mask that doesn't make that worse. I've never tried Clarins before, though, so it might be worth a shot.
