Talking Nail Care

I hate my nails. Like despise them. Ever since I was younger I've always had brittle nails. It's not that I chewed them, it's just that they've always been bendy, brittle and to be honest, horrific. I've tried the supplements, I've tried eating gelatine, changing my diet, all the above, they are just brittle.
I don't understand anyone who can wear Essie polish for more than a day, mine chips the day of painting them. I don't understand people who can go a day without wearing nailpolish. My nails will chip straight away. So I'm going to give a little rant about for those with nails that will never work -

Two products that have helped me mildly get through my brittle nail stages are; Sally Hansen Miracle Cure, Sally Hansen Hard as Nails and the Cowshed Nourishing Cuticle OilI remember trying out Sally Hansen and noticing how quickly my nails were becoming stronger. Like I said, if I don't feel like wearing nail polish, my nails will chip, unless I've got a Sally Hansen clear-coat on. It's aimed at stopping nails from splitting, breaking and peeling, and something I seriously have difficulty with is splitting.

As much as these products do a great job at trying to protect my nails, I sometimes just need an easy fix. For me that's where acrylic nails come in. I know this won't necessarily help my nails in the long run, but unfortunately for moments like my graduations, weddings and parties I think I have to give in. Secondly, the manicurist always preps my nails, with the filing, cuticle removal, soaking and other various bits and bobs so she must be doing something helpful to them right? Probably not. The one negative thing about getting your nails done is the price. Usually mine last around 2 weeks (depending on whether I'm lazy and do washing up) and it costs around £20 in Surrey (around £30 in London) to get them done. You have to be super careful as well to always soak them in acetone to remove them (hand on heart, I don't 60% of the time) and your nails will look crappier than when you started.

If I can't either afford to get my nails done so often or if they don't have an appointment, my go-to nail products are the ElegantTouch falsies. I've raved about ElegantTouch False Nails on the blog numerous times but I generally do think they are the best quick fix for crappy nails. If you're someone who chews their nails, can't paint nails or just generally like me, has horrible nails, I would recommend these. They do a variety of shades, shapes and sizes and do think they look natural if you file them down to the shape you want. The one thing I have to say though, don't peel these off! You'll do more damage to your nails and they'll be in worse condition than before!

I would love to know if anyone has any advice for someone like me who just can't seem to deal with my brittle nails. Send me product links, your blog posts - anything, I'm seriously desperate here! Maybe 2017 can be the year my nails can stop being as dramatic as me.

  1. I need to get cuticle oil soon since my hands and nail especially have become so dry because of the weather!

    1. I think cuticule oil helps with the healthiness of the skin around nails but other than that I'm not sure it does much to strengthen them :) xx

  3. I have the same problems - I don't like my nails, I bite them and the nail polish chips after one or two days. Me resolution? I saved up and I bought my own gel set and I started to make gel nails at home. Now I am more satisfied and my nails are in much better condition. But I understand that gel nails don't have to be the best option for everyone, so then I would recommend the gel nail polishes with curing system - they last 1-2 weeks and you can always do them at home (if you don't want to invest in colored gel nail polishes, than invest only in clear one and then use your regular polishes -> regular nail polish last longer on gel than on natural nail).

    1. I think this is something I definitely need to invest in! My cousin is a air stewardess and has her own one at home and it just seems to make better financial sense! Sounds really stupid but I didn't know that you could put on normal polish on top of just a clear gel! That actually really makes a lot of sense! xx

  4. Yes I need cuticle oil too! I'm so bad at even keeping up with painting my nails, let alone anything else! I wish I didn't have to work. If I didn't have a manual job, I'd put so much more effort into my nails! (excuses, excuses!)

  5. I use Essie's apricot cuticle oil and it works for me. I guess the cowshed one is a similar one :-)

  8. My nails are exactly the same. I can paint them and within an hour they can chip. Now, I do my own gel at home. It obviously costs a lot more to get all of the stuff, but once you have it, it lasts!

    1. I think this is the way I need to go because with gel nails they do last a lot longer on me and if I'm good and don't pick it off, my nails are longer and stronger after it! xx

  9. I go through stages when my nails are horrible too and its the worst! I know you said you've tried supplements, but I have been taking 'Solgar: Skin, Nails and Hair Formula' from Holland & Barrett and they REALLY helped mine! Just a suggestion haha! x
