Makeup Tips I've Adopted

I'm by no means any sort of makeup artist me sneezing mid-way doing my mascara definitely captures that but since my love for makeup and hours spent watching tutorials has grown, I've definitely found a couple of makeup tips that I've been trying to learn to live by.

Less is more - I think this is something that may seem so obvious but I am so guilty of pumping 4 splodges of foundation on the back of my hand and basically saturating my face in it and ending up with a cake face not a good look. It's not only foundation but I've done the same with contouring, thinking the best way forward was to smother my brush in product and create an attractive zebra line on my face and finding it too difficult to blend out. Start smaller and work your way up, you'll also find that your foundation doesn't run out quite as quickly as it normally does....

Tightlining is your friend - This is actually a new tip I've been trying to adopt in my everyday makeup routine. I was always a big fan of the classic thin bar eyeliner look but now I've been obsessed with using my Revlon Colorstay 2 in 1 Angled Kajal Eyeliner* to tightline. Not only is a bar eyeliner painful to re-create everyday as it's so difficult to get a straight line everyday, but I can find gel eyeliner can look extremely harsh for an everyday look and with a gold or champagne eye.

Conceal First - When I first started out using foundation and concealer I would go pretty ham on the concealer after I'd done my foundation. However I found that using concealer prior to my foundation was a much better alternative. As my concealers are more heavy duty, it was easier to blend them out into my skin rather than on top of foundation, it made it look overall more natural whilst still giving you the same coverage. On the same note of 'less is more', when you use concealer first you actually realize that you probably need to use less foundation than you originally think.

Go Back to Basics with Skincare - It's easy to get carried away with all the lotions and potions when you first start out. I can't even begin to tell you how many cleansers, moisturizers, oils and toners I had going on. My skin is quite sensitive and I found that using so many products was actually causing more problems. I've really stripped down my skincare routine to; Lush Ultrabland Cleanser (for when I have a natural makeup look) or my T-Zone Black Charcoal & Bamboo Ultra Purifying Face Wash* (if I have a more full-face of makeup), my Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Oil and my First Aid Ultra Repair Beauty Moisturizer. And that's it. I've found my skin has been a lot happier since removing toners/exfoliaters and serums.

Let me know a couple of makeup tips you've adopted since starting out!

  1. I recently started to have a skincare routine but I feel it's not doing much, and I only use about 4 products, maybe I need to change them.

  3. Great post! I have always thought that tightlining would be such a pain to remove so I never do it, I should definitely try it. Firm believe in less is more as well xxx

  4. I totally agree with going back to basics with skincare, sometimes less is more!

  5. I'm definitely quite a basic person with my skincare and agree with this tip. For some reason I very rarely use concealer first, I might have to give it another go.

  8. I definitely agree with keeping it simple with skincare, when I have a break-out I really like to strip it back and my skin gets back to normal much quicker! xxx

  9. I definitely agree with not over-doing it on the skincare, stripping it back can do wonders for your skin. xx

  10. Fantastic tips and I am certainly stealing some!! Thanks for sharing! xx

  11. I guess Less is more is the best tip ! Simple but the most important !

  12. Loved this post! I have a really simple skincare routine as well because my skin is pretty sensitive so it's better for me to keep it simple! Something I've been realising is that I wasn't using foundation because I didn't want a "full-on makeup look" but then I was applying concealer almost all over my face, now I use foundation to make my skin look more even and I use way less concealer, it looks way better in my opinion! Xx

  13. I love this post! I still haven't tried putting on concealer first. I definitely need to give it a go!

  14. I love tightlining - it makes such a difference in how someone looks. It's hard as a makeup artist convincing people it's a good idea, though!

  15. I love tightlining and have been doing that forever. The main reason is because I sux at drawing a straight line across my lids. I just think it looks better. Have to try that Revlon liner though 😊

  16. such great tips, i've never even heard of tight lining! i'm only just starting to experiment with eyeliner so i'll definitely have to try!

  17. I completely agree with concealing first, I always try to hide any darkness, blemishes and redness to give me a blank canvas before I go in with foundation!
