The Things I've Learned Since Turning 25

So not only am I finally back to writing on this blog, it's a new week and I'm ready,  it actually has felt like YEARS, but I'm also back a little older. I turned 25 last month and now that I'm halfway to 50  not that I've mentioned it at all to anyone I thought it would actually be nice to do a little post on some things I've learned in these 25 years.

It's OK To Grow Apart from Friends
I think this is one of the hardest ones I learnt. I went to the same High School for 15 years so I knew a lot of people for more than 10 years of my life, but this kind of goes hand in hand with number 2. You move on. You realise that it's sometimes hard to keep in contact with people who go to different universities, and even harder when you grow up and change and realise you just don't have the same things in common anymore. It's the same with university friends too,  at the beginning I tried really hard to make things work, but in the end found it worse when you put in a lot of effort and they wouldn't. You also learn who your true friends are, those who will always be around.

You Are Not the Same Person You Were When Younger
I cannot even tell you how different I am as a person than I was when I was younger. I mean I'm a different person this year than last year, but through leaving home, going to university, moving to London and getting jobs I think I'm finally the person I actually was. A lot of the time I think I felt a little bit worried about being my true self when I was in school, and I've found that I am so much happier in myself now that I've actually grown away from it.

There's A Lot of Pressure To Be Successful
I feel like there are always going to be parts in your life where you feel a lot of pressure to be successful when it comes to your education. Whether that's your GCSE grade (or MYP Grades in my school), your A-Levels (or IB), your University Grades it's so hard not to get worked up about whether or not you are doing your best. I felt like this didn't even stop after school or Uni, it carries on when you get a job. Am I doing my best? Why am I not moving up? When should I be moving up? Am I good enough at this job? I then realised that actually the most important thing isn't too put that pressure on you, you're on your own journey and as long as your happy and content that's the most important thing.

You need to stop comparing yourself to others
This comes a lot with number 3. You are always comparing yourself to your friends and colleagues, it's so easy to get wound and caught up in it all. One of my favourite ever quotes is; Comparison is the thief of joy, and I think it is so poignant. Don't worry about what everyone else is doing, just make sure you're doing the best you can, you'll be a lot happier in yourself when you stop comparing yourself to everyone else.

Self-Care is Seriously Important
It's also so easy to get totally caught up in everything that goes on with friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, family and work that you almost forget to actually take care of yourself. I've had a lot of moments recently where I've really had to make sure to give myself a day, or even a couple of hours of self-care. Whether that's going on a walk for an afternoon sans-phone, drawing yourself a bath and reading a good book or even having a 30minute dance party in the flat with The Saturdays blaring at full volume, you really need to give yourself some time to wind down. A lot of the time I find myself constantly on my work phone during the weekends and after work, and although yes, I have to work, knowing when to shut-it off is vital.

Not Everyone Needs to Like You
I mean pretty brutal but damn true. Here comes another quote, "you could be the ripest, juiciest peach in the whole world, and there's still going to be someone who hates peaches." I stopped being a people pleaser a long time go, and no that doesn't mean I now am entitled to act and be a bitch all the time, what it means is that you are never going to please everyone, if we did none of us would have opinions, none of us would be unique.

So there we go, I mean a pretty brutal post this time round, but I think now being in my mid-twenties I am probably the most comfortable I've ever felt in my self, even though it did take quite a long time to get here!

  1. I think remembering that you're not the same person as you were when you were younger (or even yesterday) is such an important thing to remember. We all grow, change and evolve and I think thats amazing. Also love that you mentioned that not everyone needs to like you. I've always had this obsession with wanting people to like me and its okay if they don't, not everyone can get along!

    1. Totally agree, you aren't ever going to be that person and it's also important to remember that someone may have liked the person you were when you were 12/13 but when you grow and change and move to different places you grow and change as a person and doesn't necessarily mean you need to still have the same friends etc! xx

  4. That saying "comparison is the thief of joy" Is definitely one I find incredibly relateable, it can be the trickiest lesson to learn.

    1. Agreed! I think it's so easy to start comparing yourself and your journey to everyone around you including work, friends, blogging etc but I'm much more content since I've moved on from that! xx
