World Book Day: My Recent Book Reads

Happy World Book Day! I was actually planning on posting this blog post earlier this week as I realised it has been quite a while since my last post but with the realisation that it's World Book Day this week, it seemed apt to upload it today. World Book Day is a day where you usually dress up as one of your favourite book characters, but rather than talk about my favourite ever book, I thought I"d do a review on some of the books I've read this year

I think this book is an amazing book club read. The book follows the story of a recently married couple, Celestial and Roy. Their marriage is soon rocked when Roy gets accused of a crime that he didn't commit and is sentenced to twelve yers in prison. There are so many discussion points to be had and I think everyone will have their own opinions on the themes around the book. My one gripe is that they include a major storyline in the actual blurb of the book which I feel they could have just left the book itself!

So far this is one of my all time favourite books this year, the only one to receive 5 stars. Girl, Woman, Other follows short stories across 12 women in the UK over the course of different years. I find that sometimes short stories are really hard to get stuck into as you don't get enough time to connect with characters however I felt this book was so brilliantly written. It's definitely a long meeting

Now I don't want anyone to think I don't like a good chic-lit/holiday read. I Heart New York/Confessions of a Shopaholic are my kind of book reads, and I thought About That Night would be totally up my street. Elaine Bedell is the boss of a well known Saturday Night TV Show who has it all. But when her TV host dies live on air, her world is turned upside down. I used to work in TV so thought this would be something I'd really enjoy (not exactly resonate as it's obvs not something that's happened to me) but I felt as if the book was so lack lustre. I didn't particularly like or feel for any of the characters, and felt as if the actual storyline was a bit 'meh' and not exactly ground breaking either.

I mentioned this book a few blog posts back (I've noticed I've basically have become a book blogger! Makeup blogposts will resume shortly!) but this was another book that I really enjoyed this year. To The book follows the story of Kya, a young isolated Marsh girl who gets caught in the murder of Chase Andrews, a son from a well known family in the town. The book is beautifully written and usually I'm not a big fan of big descriptive books as I find it quite dull after a while, but this book was the perfect balance between story and description. It's moving, tragic, and heartbreaking but beautiful at the same time.

Have You Seen Her by Lisa Hall  4*

It's been a while since I've read a good crime thriller novel (I don't consider the above or About That Night to be under that category really) and I have to say I really enjoyed this book. There were so many parts I thought I knew 'whodunnit' but I hadn't. I felt like I could really envisage the family dynamics and really picture the whole town/story that was being written out.  I felt as if I hadn't read a good proper 'crime thriller' in a while and this was definitely a good'n.

Let me know if you've read any good books recently or what your thoughts are on any of the above!
