Cracking My Skincare Routine

It's taken me a while but I think I've finally found my holy grails, the products that have cracked my skincare routine and are faultless in my opinion. Obviously everyone's skincare routine will be different, as our skin ultimately differs from one another.

For background, my skin type is definitely dry, sensitive but still prone to hormonal spots and breakouts. It's taken me probably a good couple of years to finally find the products that keep my skin hydrated and clear, but also what products I can use when my skin changes due to weather, mask wearing and hormones, the products that re-balance my skin and sort it out.

Moisturiser

I've tried so many moisturisers in my time with my dehydrated skin. The Clinique Moisture Surge didn't nearly hit the spot,  the Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream was far too pricey and I didn't see a significant change quickly, but the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream has just floored me. I use this as both my day and night cream, and it's incredibly soothing. It's quite a thick cream, but for those with severely dehydrated skin, it's a god send.

Toner

With dehydrated skin, sometimes a toner is the best way to get rid of the top layer of dead skin cells. The Pixi Glow Tonic It aims to exfoliate, smooth, purify and re-balance skin and that's exactly what I've found it does. I don't use toner daily as I find it can be a bit too abrasive, but once or twice a week it gives my skin that extra bit of clean. A lot of toners contain rose which is something I need to stay away from, but this one I find isn't too harsh on my skin.

Cleanser

I used to be a massive fan of the Biore Charcoal Anti-Blemish cleanser, however the one thing that irked me was that you couldn't use it to travel unless you decanted it. I then was very kindly gifted the Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish* as part of a collaboration with Boots, and oh my god have I fallen in love with it. I had heard loads of people rave about it, but hadn't tried it, but I'm totally converted. The cleanser is filled with ingredients perfect for those who suffer with dry skin including cocoa butter and beeswax and it's just so soothing on my skin. The cleanser also perfectly breaks down product on your face, leaving my skin feeling clean.

Oil

I think I've been using Kiehl's Midnight Recover Oil for years and years now and it's honestly a life saver. I don't think I will ever stop using this oil. I've gone through periods where I've obviously run out of it and I can massively see a difference in my skin. It makes my skin feel so much more hydrated and glowy. I used to have the day oil as well which I adored, but haven't used it for a while. It's probably my more pricier item in my skincare, a bottle usually retails around £53 but that bottle probably lasts me around 6 months, which I don't think in the long term is that expensive. I usually wait to ask it for Christmas or my birthday. My one gripe is, it's a glass bottle so not at all travel friendly.

Eye Cream

I was very kindly gifted a while back a couple of Antipodes products. I hadn't ever used an eye cream before but I did find that every now and again I would get a bit of texture, and let's be honest, with this year, my eyes need some TLC. The Antipodes Kiwi Seed Gold Luminous Eye Cream* is extremely luxurious. I apply it every night just under my eyes and I do find that it has hydrated and cleared up the texture under my eyes. It's definitely moisturised my under eyes as well meaning it leaves a nice base to apply my makeup on.

Exfoliator

Although I have dry skin, I have to be extremely careful when it comes to exfoliators as my skin is quite sensitive. The Elizabeth Arden Visible Difference Skin Balancing Exfoliating Cleanser however is absolutely amazing. Every now and again,  especially in Winter and Summer, my skin has a bit of a turn, and I get really bad texture or some times hormonal spots and this exfoliator just sorts it out. It purifies, cleanses and exfoliates my skin without being too abrasive. Rather than being filled with thick sandy grains which I find too harsh on my skin, it's filled with gentle beads. Highly recommend.

Face Mask

I use the Clarins SOS Pure Rebalancing Clay Mask as a bit of a duo product. I use it both as a mask every now and again, applying all over my face, but I also use it as a spot cream. If I have a spot coming on, or is already there, I apply a small pea-sized amount on and it massively reduces the redness and size of my spots overnight. I've been so impressed with this mask. Usually clay wouldn't be my first option as a face mask as like I said, dry skin. But when I have spots, it's due to excess oil or hormones and this sorts it right out.

Skin Protectant

Lastly, my all time favourite product that I honestly don't think I'd ever go without it. I was introduced to the Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream Protectant a couple of years ago by my flatmate. It's a thick gel-like cream which aims to heal your skin within 8 hours. I use this for everything. Cracked lips, dry knuckles, dry patches on my face, literally there is nothing that this product doesn't sort. Although yes it is a bit on the pricier side, it is totally worth it.

    1. Honestly it's so good. It took about 2 months of me using it to really see the difference, but once I stop using it for a while my skin is so dehydrated again! xx

  4. Such amazing products in here, and it's so interesting to see how someone with a completely different skin type can get on with the same products as I do! I love the Pixi Glow Tonic, but I have oily combination skin, with hormonal breakouts. I think this toner definitely helps with that last one, glycolic acid does wonders for my acne. (Well, against, not for, but you get the point...)

Also the Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Oil is a classic. I'm not using it at the minute as I'm going through my Suzanne Kaufmann Line F oil, which I feel is very similar. I'm a bit fussy with oils and because my skin is oily on itself, I can't deal with really heavy, thick oils. The Midnight Recovery is perfect as it feels lightweight, but I can also see it benefitting my skin. I know why it's such a cult classic, as literally all skin types seem to get on with it, just like you!

So good to know about the Clarins mask using it as spot treatment, I would never think of that, such a clever idea! ;)

    1. That is mad! I think tonic is probably one of those products that works for multi skin types because it ultimately the other products are really quite 'skin type' specific, for example the Liz Earle and Midnight Oils are for those who need more hydration, but Glow Tonic is purely there for all types! xx

  6. I'm currently going through the same journey right now in trying to discover a skincare routine that works for me. I have very acne prone skin too. I liked Liz Earle when I tried it before but it didn't really do much for me. I'm yet to try Pixi products but I've heard amazing things! x
